Ellie Black wins Gold on Vault at Elite Canada gymnastics meet
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- Gearing up for the upcoming battle to win a spot on the Canadian women’s 2012 Olympic gymnastics team Kristina Vaculik of Whitby, Ont., Victoria Moors and Madeline Gardiner, both of Cambridge, Ont., and Brittany Rogers of Coquitlam, B.C., all came through with strong performances on the final day of competition Sunday at Elite Canada.
Vaculik, winner of the all around title on Friday, led the way again, winning a medal in three four event finals, taking silver on beam and uneven bars and bronze on floor. Vaculik also placed fourth on vault.
Moors, 15, who played a major role last month in England helping Canada qualify a full team for the 2012 Games, delivered another superb performance, winning gold on floor and bronze on uneven bars.
In the floor exercise, Moors had no close rivals, taking the title with a score of 14.650 points. Stefanie Merkle of Petersburg, Ont., placed second with 13.800 and Vaculik was third at 13.750.
“I took a bit of a low key approach to training after the Olympic qualification meet but now I’m working more on cleaning things up and maybe adding more difficulty,” said Moors, who has seamlessly moved up from the junior ranks to the senior team in the last year.
In the beam final Gardiner edged Vaculik for the gold medal.
Rogers, who came close to quitting gymnastics after breaking her ankle two years ago at the Pacific Rim championships, followed up a strong showing in the all around with the gold medal on uneven bars and a silver on vault.
“It was a huge confidence boost for sure,” said Rogers. “Any meet leading up to these Games is a big stepping stone. I kind of quit gymnastics and didn’t know if I was strong enough to get back into the sport because it’s so tough but it’s so worth it.”
Rogers, who was also a member of the team at the Olympic qualifier last month in London, said she’s looking forward to a friendly competition with her teammates in the months ahead to determine the six gymnasts who will be selected to compete at the Games this summer.
“It’s going to be stressful for sure. We’re close as a team but we also have that inner competitor inside of us to try and get a spot on the Olympic team. The pressure is on and it’s all about hitting your routines and staying healthy. Everybody is in the same boat so we all know what to expect.”
Other top contenders for the Olympic team are Peng Peng Lee of Toronto, who took a break following the world championships and London test event, Talia Chiarelli of Ottawa and Boston and Mikaela Gerber of Cambridge, Ont.
Rounding out the women’s senior event finals Ellie Black of Halifax took the gold on vault.
In the junior event finals, 11-year-old Shallon Olsen of Vancouver won gold on floor and vault and finished in a tie for second on uneven bars to cap an impressive debut at her first competition as a junior.
Olsen, who also won the all around title on Friday, has been turning heads with her poise and the high level of difficulty in her routines, particuarly on vault, for such a young competitor.
Victoria-Kayen Woo of Montreal won the gold medal on uneven bars and added a bronze on floor while her sister Rose-Kalam topped the field on beam.
Maegan Chant of Waterdown, Ont., also had a strong competition, adding silver medals in the floor and vault finals to the all around bronze.

National Gymnastics Week kicked off its second decade on Monday with a new look and a renewed commitment to celebrate gymnastics in all its forms.
First launched in 2002, National Gymnastics Week brings together over 700 clubs across the country to promote the benefits of gymnastics to people of all ages and abilities.
From bouncing five year olds starting out in their first recreational programs to elite athletes aiming to compete at the 2012 Summer Olympics, National Gymnastics Week has something for everyone.

Three more medals for Canada at Pan Am Games
Hugh Smith wins Bronze
GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Canadian competitors saved the best for last winning three medals on the final day of the Pan Am Games gymnastics event.
Kristina Vaculik of Whitby, Ont., won a silver medal on the balance beam and Mikaela Gerber of Cambridge, Ont., chipped in with another silver on floor while Hugh Smith of Halifax earned bronze in the men's vault.
Vaculik, who led Canada to a team silver in the women's event and won bronze in the all around, claimed her third Pan Am medal with a score of 13.925 in the beam final.
Ana Sofia Gomez of Guatelmala won gold with 14.175 points and Daniele Hypolito of Brazil took the bronze with a score of 13.750. Talia Chiarelli of Ottawa placed fifth.
Competing last in the floor final, Gerber won the silver medal with a score of 13.775, dropping Vaculik from third to fourth.
"You never like to kick your own teammate out of a medal but I just went out and competed and let things turn out the way they did," said Gerber, who moved up to the senior Canadian team just over a year ago. "I like competing last. You know how the other gymnasts have done and it's fun."
Ana Estefania Lago of Mexico squeaked in for the gold with a score of 13.800 to the delight of the hometown crowd.
Daniele Hypolito of Brazil was third.
In the men's vault, Diego Hypolito of Brazil won gold with a score of 15.875 followed by Tomas Enrique Gonzalez of Chile in second with 15.587 points and Smith third at 15.575.
"I've been training for this day for so long and it turned out fantastic," said Smith, whose mother is Mexican and was cheered on by family and friends in the stands.
"I did ok in the all around the other day but vault is the event where I was really going for a medal. I knew I needed to hit both vaults clean and land on my feet and I did."
Scott Morgan of Vancouver was fifth.

Get Ready For National Gymnastics Week January 18-24, 2010
OTTAWA -- Gymnasts of all ages from coast to coast will getting an upside-down look at the world on Saturday, January 23rd, when they share the experience of performing a handstand at precisely 2 PM, wherever they live in Canada, as part National Gymnastics Week which runs from January 18-24.
Many other activities are planned at clubs across the country in a combined effort including Gymnastics Canada, 12-provincial/territorial federations and over 700 hundred clubs across Canada.
From recreational gymnastics programs all the way up to national teams in artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline, Gymnastics Canada has over 200,000 individual members, including 20,000 competitive gymnasts and 7,500 certified coaches.
An astounding 30 million people are members of their country’s gymnastics federation, making the sport one of the most popular in the world.
“There is room for everyone in this sport, from the recreational gymnast who participates just for fun, to the high performance international competitor who is drawn by the allure of a gold medal,” says Gymnastics Canada CEO, Jean-Paul Caron of Ottawa.
“Gymnastics not only helps you improve your fitness, it also demands mental focus, and provides a great outlet for personal expression. You’re never too young, or too old, to gain something positive from the sport.”
Gymnastics is also recognized by the International Olympic Committee and Sport Canada as one of several "foundational sports" that form the basis of participation in many other sports.
